BASIS

This project was inspired by the chandelier that hung in my childhood bedroom a piece I remember for its elegant curves and the way it shaped the room’s atmosphere. I wanted to translate those ornamental shapes into a modern, abstract card design. After seeing another designer create something with a similar concept, I felt inspired to reinterpret the idea in my own style, using my own forms, colours, and visual rhythm.

VISION

My vision was to create a deck that felt ornamental and artistic, while still remaining functional as a playing card set. I wanted the abstract curves to mimic the shapes found in vintage chandeliers soft, looping, and symmetrical while the colour palette of pinks and blues brought a more contemporary, gentle feel. The goal was to merge nostalgia with modern design, creating something elegant yet playful.

PROCESS

I started by sketching the curved chandelier-inspired forms and refining them into clean, consistent shapes that could be used across all the cards. Maintaining perfect alignment and symmetry was one of the biggest challenges, as the design relies heavily on balance and repetition. I chose to work with a limited palette of pink and blue tones, which helped maintain consistency and gave the deck a dreamy, cohesive look.

Throughout the design process, I focused on creating abstract shapes that still carried the essence of chandelier details without being too literal. This required careful adjustment of spacing, mirroring, and proportions to ensure the final cards felt polished and intentional.

OUTCOME

The final deck is soft, abstract, and visually unique. The use of pinks and blues creates a calm, elegant atmosphere, while the chandelier-inspired curves give the cards a sense of movement and refinement. Though the alignment process was challenging, the precision ultimately strengthened the overall design.

The result is a deck that feels artistic, balanced, and different from anything I had created before.

TAKEAWAYS

This project pushed me to experiment with more abstract forms and stricter alignment rules than I am used to. It taught me the importance of precision, repetition, and careful spacing especially when dealing with symmetrical designs. Most importantly, it allowed me to reconnect with a childhood memory and reinterpret it into something modern and personal. It remains one of my favourite projects because of how unique and nostalgic it feels.
