This project was an illustrated movie poster for Avatar: The Way of Water, and it quickly became one of my most personal and meaningful pieces. As a huge Avatar fan, I felt immediately inspired and wanted to create something that truly honored the film. What began as a single poster for The Way of Water grew into a larger series, ultimately including posters for Avatar (2009) and Avatar: Fire and Ash. This expansion allowed me to explore the world of Pandora visually while building a cohesive set of illustrations.
VISION
My initial concept was to create a poster using silhouette-style artwork to emphasize strong shapes, recognizable moments, and character outlines. I wanted the composition to feel symbolic filled with elements that fans would instantly understand. Over time, I introduced more illustrated details within the silhouettes to give each piece more personality without losing the minimal style. A key decision was to use flat colours throughout the entire poster. Even though I typically prefer more detailed, textured artwork, I was committed to keeping this series clean, simple, and visually bold.
PROCESS
I began by experimenting with silhouettes and determining which shapes best represented the characters and themes of the film. Once the base structure was established, I added small illustrated elements inside the silhouettes to make each character identifiable. This part of the project was the most challenging capturing recognizable features with minimal detail required precision and restraint. I carefully selected flat colour palettes inspired by the environments, cultures, and scenes from the movie, ensuring everything felt cohesive and true to the world of Pandora.
Throughout the process, I focused on including symbols and references that only someone familiar with the movies would fully appreciate. Each icon, shape, and visual cue was intentionally chosen to reflect key moments or characters in the story.
OUTCOME
The final poster along with the two additional posters I created captures the spirit of the Avatar universe in a minimal yet expressive style. The use of silhouettes paired with simple illustrations creates a strong visual identity, and the flat colours give the poster a clean, contemporary feel.
Despite the challenges, especially with ensuring characters were recognizable through minimal details, the final result is a piece I’m truly proud of. The series feels cohesive, symbolic, and deeply connected to the films I love.
TAKEAWAYS
This project taught me how powerful minimalism can be when paired with thoughtful detail. I learned to push beyond my comfort zone, especially in using flat colours and simplified forms. It also showed me how much meaning can be communicated through subtle visual cues especially when designing for a story-rich universe like Avatar. Most importantly, this project reminded me how fun and rewarding it is to work on something you’re genuinely passionate about, and it strengthened my confidence in combining illustration with conceptual storytelling.
